Port Pipes, or Port Sippers, are for drinking spirits, dessert wine or port. The use of Port Pipes dates back to Germany in the 1600s where the burghers used ceramic versions to drink their schnaps. In the recently arrived pipe smoking culture of that time, they no doubt enjoyed holding something that felt like a pipe. An argument in favour of Port Pipes is that sipping from the glass' bottom ensures drinking alcohol that hasn't oxidized.
